Harrison Ford tops US box office with baseball pic, 42

HARRISON Ford has another US No.1 movie under his belt now that baseball movie 42 has proved a hit among movie-goers.

42 recounts the career of Jackie Robinson, the man who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Written and directed by Brian Helgeland (of A Knight’s Tale fame), the film stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Ford as the Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey.

The film took $27.3 million to comfortably place at the top of the pile and won widespread acclaim too.

Taking second place was Scary Movie 5, the latest in the horror movie parody series, wiht $15.2 million. The film is notable for featuring performances from Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Simon Rex and Ashley Tisdale.

Last week’s box office champion, Evil Dead slipped from first to fifth with $9.5 million in its second weekend, meaning that animated hit The Croods continued to hold strong at third with $13.2 million and GI Joe: Retaliation came fourth with $10.8 million (thereby surpassing the $100 million mark in the US alone).

Universal’s Jurrasic Park in 3D fell to sixth in its second weekend with $8.9 million, while Gerard Butler actioner Olympus Has Fallen – which opens in UK cinemas on Wednesday – slipped to seventh with $7.3 million.
