HARRY Potter has once again topped a poll to find the best-loved book-to-film adaptations, as picked by audiences in the UK.

A total of 32% of the 2,000 cinemagoers questioned placed the series based on JK Rowling’s novels in their top 10, echoing a similar survey in March 2015.

But if that comes as little surprise, then the inclusion of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in second place was, particularly as the literary classic didn’t even feature last year. This time around, it was picked by 30% of respondents in their top 10.

Stephen King’s The Shawshank Redemption took third place, with 28%, while another of the horror master’s novels, The Green Mile, came in seventh.

JRR Tolkien also featured twice on the list for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, both of which were turned into movie trilogies by the filmmaker Peter Jackson. The former series placed fourth, while The Hobbit came ninth.

Two of the literary world’s most famous spies took fifth and sixth spots – Ian Fleming’s James Bond and Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne. Both have recently seen big screen outings in the form of Spectre and Jason Borne.

Young adult and children’s series performed predictably well, with The Hunger Games placing 17th alongside classics such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Jungle Book, the latter of which may have benefited from the success of Jon Favreau’s recent acclaimed CGI version of Rudyard Kipling’s adventure.

And Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones series also featured, in 11th spot. The latest instalment, Bridget Jones’s Baby, is currently topping the global box office.

Of the notable absentees from this year’s list, Young Adult vampire drama the Twilight series is a particularly glaring omission. While Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code is also absent, despite the fact the latest adaptation of one of his works, Inferno, is due for imminent release.

While Holocaust drama Schindler’s List is also missing despite the Oscar-winning pedigree of Steven Spielberg’s film.
