Helen Mirren joins supernatural drama Winchester

Eye In The Sky

Story by Jack Foley

HELEN Mirren is to star in a new supernatural thriller called Winchester.

Based on a true story, the film will follow the story of the heiress to the Winchester weapons fortune, who fast-tracked the construction of a mansion because she believed it would hold off the spirits of the victims of the family business.

It will reveal how Sarah Winchester (to be played by Mirren) employed carpenters to work 24/7 on expanding her San Jose home in California following the death of her husband and baby daughter.

She was reportedly acting in the belief that extending the mansion was necessary to prevent her own death.

And she continued building off and on for 38 years before she died of heart failure at the age of 83. The house has since become a tourist attraction and boasts close to 160 rooms, including 40 bedrooms, two ballrooms and three elevators.

The house got its ‘mystery’ tag from a newspaper article about a 1924 visit by Harry Houdini, who was reportedly attempting to communicate with the mansion’s otherworldly inhabitants.

However, the film itself will focus on the events following the arrival of San Francisco psychiatrist Eric Price, who is at first dubious about the claims that the so-called ‘Winchester mystery house’ is haunted. But he is soon confronted with ghosts and the true cost of gun violence.

It is not yet known who will play Price.

Michael and Peter Spierig, who previously helmed the critically-acclaimed Ethan Hawke starrer Predestination, will direct.

Mirren last appeared in the critical hit Eye In The Sky.
