FOX Searchlight has acquired the rights to Hilary Swank’s biopic about Betty Anne Waters.
The film, which co-stars Sam Rockwell, Melissa Leo, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis and Peter Gallagher, has now been scheduled for a US release in the autumn, according to Variety.
The film is based on the true story of Waters, an unemployed single mother who spent almost a decade earning herself a law degree so that she could prove her brother’s innocence after he was convicted for a murder/robbery in 1983 that she was convinced he did not commit.
A statement by Fox Searchlight co-presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley said: “Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, backed by an extraordinary supporting cast, deliver powerhouse performances in Tony Goldwyn’s emotionally resonant film.”
Swank was most recently seen in another Fox Searchlight biopic, Amelia
