ANIMATED sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 has shot to the top of the US box office and nabbed the top September opening of all time with a US debut of $47.5 million.

The figure, which does not account for inflation, is a much needed win for its voice star, Adam Sandler, whose more recent live-action roles have tended to flop.

In second place, meanwhile, was Nancy Meyers’ comedy The Intern, starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro. The comedy-drama nabbed $18.2 million in its debut and played to larger older audiences.

While the top two films performed better or roughly in line with pre-weekend tracking, Baltasar Kormakur’s Everest didn’t fare quite as well as initially hoped, coming in with $13.1 million. The film had opened a week earlier in 3D and IMAX format but failed to make as big an impact upon normal screens.

Losely based on the real-life tale of two climbing expeditions left stranded at the top the world’s largest mountain in 1996, the film stars Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke among its talented ensemble.

However, it is performing better internationally, where it took in another $33.8 million from 62 markets for a foreign tally of $73.7 million and a global total of $96.8 million.

Everest therefore placed fourth in the US, one place behind holdover title Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials which, in its second weekend, took $14 million for a US total of $51.7 million.

Internationally, Scorch Trials zoomed past the $100 million mark, earning $28.4 million from 70 territories for a foreign total of $121.8 million and global haul of $173.5 million.

Johnny Depp’s Black Mass rounded out the top five with $11.5 million for a 10-day US total so far of $42.6 million.

The other box office news of note came from Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed crime-thriller Sicario, which continued to score big as it expanded from a limited, specialty release to more cinemas. The Emily Blunt movie blazed into the top 10, grossing $1.8 million for one of the best location averages of the weekend.
