Hugo Weaving in talks for Red Skull role

Story by Jack Foley

HUGO Weaving is being lined up to play the villainous Red Skull in Marvel Studios’ Captain America movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog, negotiations are at “a delicate stage”, with an outcome due within the next couple of days.

Director Joe Johnston is keen to land Weaving, whose pedigree extends to prominent roles in The Matrix and Lord of the Rings trilogies, but Marvel may be looking at multi-picture deals involving its stars.

What’s more, Johnston has yet to cast an actor to play Steve Rogers, Captain America’s alter ego. But both Weaving and Johnston worked together on the recent Wolfman.

The Red Skull is a major step in the right direction as the studio looks to move towards a production date, however, as the character has been Captain America’s arch-enemy since 1941, when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man.
