Idris Elba's No Good Deed tops US box office

No Good Deed

Story by Jack Foley

IDRIS Elba thriller No Good Deed has topped the US box office with $24.5 million.

The film, which co-stars Taraji P. Henson, comfortably beat competition from the weekend’s other major new release, the family film Dolphin Tale 2, which under-performed with $16.6 million.

No Good Deed finds Henson playing a district attorney turned stay-at-home mother who is living an ideal life in the suburbs until a charming convict (played by Luther‘s Elba) shows up at her door.

While those two new releases occupied the top two spots, box office summer sensation Guardians of the Galaxy continued to perform well, slipping from first to third and becoming the first film of 2014 to hit the $300 million mark in the US alone.

Globally, the James Gunn-directed tentpole has crossed $600 million to finish Sunday with a total of $611.5 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Let’s Be Cops rounded out the top five.

But another piece of notable box office success came from Tom Hardy thriller The Drop, which took $4.2 million from only 809 theatres. The thriller, based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), also marks the final film of the late James Gandolfini.
