Jack O'Connell lands lead in Angelina Jolie's Unbroken

Dominic Savage's Dive

Story by Jack Foley

BRITISH actor Jack O’Connell has landed the lead role in Angelina Jolie’s next directorial project, Unbroken.

Formerly best known for his role on the hit series Skins, O’Connell has also made a name for himself in Dominic Savage’s Dive (pictured) as well as Tower Block and United (playing Bobby Charlton).

In Unbroken, he will play the role of real-life World War II hero Lou Zamperini.

A Los Angeles high school track star-turned-Olympian (he raced in the 1936 Berlin Olympics), Zamperini then served during the Second World War. In 1943, however, his Air Force plane crashed in the Pacific and he was forced to survive without food and water for 47 days, enduring shark attacks, aerial attacks and hunger before washing ashore on a Japanese island behind enemy lines.

Thereafter, he was held as a prisoner of war for two years and tortured by his captors.

Based on Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 best-seller, the script for the film has also been worked on by Ethan and Joel Coen (among others).

Jolie announced her intention to direct in December. The film is due for release in December 2014, placing right in contention for the awards season.

O’Connell will next be seen playing Calisto in 300: Rise of an Empire, which is due for release in March 2014.
