Jackie Chan joins The Expendables 3
Story by Jack Foley
JACKIE Chan has joined Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 3.
The role is expected to be significant, according to Chan, who confirmed the casting news at a Kuala Lumpur press conference promoting Chinese Zodiac.
He said: “Sly had invited me to be in [The] Expendables 2 but I was too busy filming CZ and couldn’t make a commitment to the film.
“But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes.”
Chan also reportedly alluded to the possibility that Stallone was now re-jigging the script for the film to lend Chan’s role a more “buddy-buddy” vibe akin to what he’s used to in the Rush Hour films. But that remains to be confirmed.
Shooting is expected to begin next year.
Chan’s presence in the film will undoubtedly heighten its global box office appeal. For while the sequel didn’t perform as strongly as expected in the US market-place, it has proved a massive hit overseas and especially in China, where its $53 million take bettered The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man.
Chan, meanwhile, could be reuniting with his Rush Hour co-star Chris Tucker for another buddy comedy in the same vein as the films they’ve already shared.
Chan said of the project, which is tentatively titled Skip Tracer, that the script is currently being ‘viewed’ by Chris Tucker.
He added: “Personally, I feel that if he were to pick it up, it would be better if we turned it into Rush Hour 4 but I do think that three movies for the franchise is a perfect ending. It would be better to start a new buddy movie with someone new.”
