James Gunn in talks for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

JAMES Gunn has emerged as Marvel’s lead choice to direct their Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker has moved ahead of Peyton Reed and Half Nelson duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden to helm the next big blockbuster franchise they are seeking to launch.

Although Marvel has declined to comment on the story, the studio is said to like Gunn’s sensibility as well as his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror, a quality he shares with Joss Whedon, who directed The Avengers with such great success.

Gunn’s best known work is the horror-comedy Slither and the violent alternative superhero action-comedy Super.

Guardians of the Galaxy will focus on the characters Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora. A rough outline of the plot involves “a US pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants”.

The film marks the first original title in Marvel’s ‘Phase 2‘ of movies, which also includes Iron Man 3 and sequels to Captain America and Thor, as well as – inevitably – Avengers 2.
