James Mangold to direct Disney's Captain Nemo

The Wolverine, James Mangold

Story by Jack Foley

JAMES Mangold is to direct Disney’s forthcoming Captain Nemo.

The film is based on the main anti-hero from the classic Jules Verne tale 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea but will take the form of an original story rather than an adaptation of the 19th-century novel.

Sebastian Gutierrez is working on the latest draft of the script.

Disney previously adapted 20,000 Leagues into a 1954 film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Kirk Douglas and James Mason – with Mason playing Captain Nemo as a mysterious genius who explored the sea in his submarine.

As yet, there is no release date.

But Mangold – who directed The Wolverine as well as Walk The Line – is currently busy on the currently untitled Wolverine sequel, which finds Hugh Jackman taking on the iconic comic book character for potentially the last time. That film – and its R rating – is due to hit cinemas in March 2017.
