Gary Oldman

Story by Jack Foley

GARY Oldman and Colin Firth were among the winners at the 2011 Jameson Empire Awards 2011.

Oldman was named a film icon and picked up his trophy from Oscar winner Firth, while Firth himself was crowned best actor for his performance in The King’s Speech.

British actress Keira Knightley, meanwhile, was presented with an Empire Hero award.

And there were wins on the night for Christopher Nolan’s Inception, which took best film prize, Kick-Ass, which was named best British film, and Noomi Rapace, who won best actress for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Teenage star Chloe Moretz, who starred in Kick-Ass and vampire film Let Me In, won the best newcomer award.

The Jameson Empire awards, hosted by comic Dara O Briain, took place at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Sunday (March 27, 2011) exactly a month after the Oscars. They are the last major ceremony of the film awards season but reflect a more popular form of awards-giving, as voted for by readers of the magazine.

Commenting on his prize, Oldman, who recently finished filming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Colin Firth, told the BBC that he felt lucky to have had so many iconic roles, including the likes of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise, Sid Vicious, Lee Harvey Oswald, George Smiley and Commissioner Gordon in the Batman films.

Picking up Kick Ass‘s award for best British film, screenwriter and producer Jane Goldman said she was “terribly grateful” as the Empire awards are voted for by the public.

Further awards on the night went to Chris Morris’s satirical suicide bomber film Four Lions, which won best comedy, The Last Exorcism, which took best horror, and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part One, which won best sci-fi/fantasy.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo also picked up a second prize for best thriller, while Edgar Wright also scooped two trophies: an inspiration award and the best director prize for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
