Jamie Foxx is new Tarantino target for Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx in Miami Vice

Story by Jack Foley

JAMIE Foxx looks set to replace Will Smith as the lead character in Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti Western Django Unchained.

The Oscar-winning actor has been linked to the project for weeks as talks with Smith faltered (he has now reportedly passed) but The Hollywood Reporter believes the Miami Vice star is now the sole contender in Tarantino’s mind.

If successful, he would play the role of Django, the vengeful slave who teams up with a German bounty hunter to scour the Old South looking for his wife.

Another contender, Idris Elba, has also pulled out of the running because he is now doing Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.

However, while Tarantino appears to have locked his gaze on Foxx, sources claim that no offer has yet been made and talks are still in “a delicate stage” because Foxx has concerns about the role.

Tarantino is also still courting other main players in the Western, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz.

If everything comes together, Waltz would play a cocky dentist-turned-bounty hunter who trains Django to fight, Jackson would be a villainous house slave and DiCaprio would be Calvin Candie, the corrupt plantation owner who wins Django’s wife in a poker game.
