JANE Fonda is to play Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniels’ passion project The Butler.

Variety has reported that the veteran actress has been ‘tapped’ to join the star-studded ensemble, which follows the story of Eugene Allen, the White House butler whose career started with Harry Truman in 1952 and ended in 1986 with Ronald Reagan.

Daniels was inspired to make the film after reading a Washington Post report by Wil Haygood on Allen’s remarkable life.

Fonda could be lining up alongside Forest Whitaker, who is reportedly closing a deal to play Allen, as well as Oprah Winfrey, who remains in talks to play his wife.

The trade publication also reveals that David Oyelowo is in negotiations to play Allen’s son, while Liam Neeson and John Cusack are circling presidential supporting roles as Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, respectively.

Fonda would only appear in a handful of scenes.

Daniels has co-written the script with Danny Strong and is also in the process of searching for a distributor. He intends to start filming this summer.
