Jeff Bridges set to reunite with Coens for True Grit

Jeff Bridges in The Moguls

Story by Jack Foley

JEFF Bridges is in talks to reunite with the Coen brothers for their remake of classic Western True Grit.

If a deal can be reached, Bridges – who memorably starred as ‘The Dude’ in The Big Lebowski – would play the role of Marshal Rooster Cogburn, which won John Wayne an Oscar in 1969.

True Grit followed a 14-year-old girl and an aging US marshal as they entered hostile Indian territory to track down the outlaws who killed her father.

The original told the story from Cogburn’s viewpoint, but Variety reports that the update will place more emphasis on the girl – although no young actress has yet to be found for the role, which was played by Kim Darby in the original.

It will also be more faithful to the Charles Portis novel that inspired the 1969 version.

True Grit will also mark the Joel and Ethan Coens reunion with producing partner Scott Rudin, who last worked with them on the Oscar-winning No Country For Old Men.

The Coens’ latest film, A Serious Man, made its debut at the Toronto Film Festival and will also feature as part of the recently announced London Film Festival line-up
