Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban join Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok

Story by Jack Foley

JEFF Goldblum and Karl Urban have joined Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok.

The casting news was announced by Marvel and came complete with character descriptions.

Goldblum will play Grandmaster, a cosmic being who plays chess with lesser life-forms such as humans, while Urban will play Asgard warrior Skurge.

The announcement also included some more details about other characters entering the third film in the Thor franchise.

Tessa Thompson will play the classic character Valkyrie – a move that could yet lead to some uproar among die-hard devotees of the comics given that, in that form, the character is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed warrior.

Thompson’s casting is nevertheless indicative of the way in which the studio often opts to take more diverse paths in its movie casting.

Indeed, one example of this was the previous casting of Idris Elba as Heimdall, the Asgardrian who guards the bridge from the mythical city to points beyond.

Also on board for Ragnorak are Cate Blanchett as Hela, the movie’s villain, while Mark Ruffalo will appear as Marvel mainstay Bruce Banner/Hulk, Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor while Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins are also returning.

Kevin Feige, producer of the film and head of Marvel, said in a statement: “The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet.

“The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honour, and having all of them is incredible.”

Of the two newcomers, both have major new blockbusters in the pipeline. Urban will feature in Star Trek Beyond, while Goldblum will be seen in Independence Day Resurgence.
