Jeremy Renner lands Kill The Messenger
Story by Jack Foley
JEREMY Renner has landed the lead role in new thriller Kill The Messenger.
Based on the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb, who committed suicide after being denounced for exposing the CIA’s involvement in helping Nicaragua’s Contra rebels import cocaine into California in the 1980s, the film will be directed by Michael Cuesta.
Writing for the San Jose Mercury News at the time, Webb detailed how the CIA had allowed Contras to smuggle cocaine into the US in order to use the proceeds to fund their war against the Nicaraguan government in the 1980s.
The story proved massively controversial and the newspaper eventually backed down from the story, thereby bringing an end to Webb’s career. He was found dead in 2004.
Shooting on Kill The Messenger is due to begin this summer.
