JERRY Bruckheimer has upped the excitement levels for Top Gun 2 with a Tweet about Tom Cruise.

The super-producer took to social media to declare, happily: “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”

The message was accompanied by a photo of himself arm in arm with Cruise and smiling for the camera.

Development of Top Gun 2 was confirmed last year by Skydance CEO David Ellison, when it was also revealed that the plot would explore drone technology and fifth generation fighters.

“It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today,” said Ellison when speaking at a Terminator Genisys press junket last June.

Cruise is almost definite to be on board the project, as is his former co-star Val Kilmer, who played Iceman.

Kilmer announced on Facebook in November last year that he had been offered a role in the sequel, adding: “[It’s not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script.”

Bruckheimer produced Top Gun, the Oscar-winning 1986 action drama that starred Cruise as young Navy pilot Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

As yet, there is no word on a start date for production or a director. The late Tony Scott helmed the original.
