JOAQUIN Phoenix is being linked to the role of Lex Luthor in the forthcoming sequel to Man of Steel.

According to Variety, the Oscar nominated actor has been approached by Warner Bros with a view to playing the main villain in the film, which also pits Henry Cavill’s Superman against Ben Affleck’s Batman.

However, the report states that Phoenix himself may not be inclined to join the project, having swayed away from mainstream movies in recent years.

He is also reportedly considering a separate offer to star in the Gus Van Sant movie Sea of Trees.

Sources quoted by Variety could not confirm whether Phoenix is being specifically lined up for the role of Superman nemesis Luthor. But he is being talked about in terms of the movie’s main villain despite similar links to actors like Jason Momoa and Callan Mulvey.

The as-yet untitled Man of Steel sequel is due to open in cinemas on July 17, 2015, and reunites Henry Cavill and Amy Adams with Zack Snyder as director.

Phoenix will shortly be seen in Spike Jonze’s Her for which he is winning rave reviews.
