John Boyega and Will Poulter to attend Q&A screening of Detroit at Hackney Picturehouse

Story by Jack Foley

KATHRYN Bigelow will attend Hackney Picturehouse in London on Thursday, August 17, 2017, for a special Q&A after a screening of her new film Detroit.

The film’s stars, John Boyega, Will Poulter and Algee Smith, will also be in attendance.

Detroit tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of ‘67.

The action is centred on the Algiers Motel on a sweltering hot July night, where a random shot from a starting pistol brought in the National Guard and a large number of police sharpshooters.

Three black men were left dead and several more brutally beaten; a black security guard, Melvin Dismukes (John Boyega, Star Wars’ Finn), tried desperately to mediate between his white superiors and an enraged African-American community.

Freighted with characteristic dramatic intensity and shot with a gritty realism, Bigelow’s latest is a timely reminder of the deep and potentially lethal divisions in American society.

Detroit opens in UK cinemas on Friday, August 25, 2017. The screening takes place at 7pm. Find out more by visiting the Hackney Picturehouse website
