JOHN Boyega has been cast as the lead in Pacific Rim 2.

The Star Wars actor will play the son of the marshal played by Idris Elba in the original, according to Deadline.

News of the casting was welcomed by the film’s producer, Guillermo del Toro, who directed the 2013 original but who won’t be returning to helm the follow-up.

He commented: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Steven S DeKnight, creator of the Starz series Spartacus, will be making his feature directorial debut with Pacific Rim 2.

Del Toro, who was initially supposed to follow up last year’s Crimson Peak with Pacific Rim 2, is now reportedly focused on developing a new version of Fantastic Voyage, based on the 1966 original. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scribe David S Goyer is penning the screenplay.

In-demand Boyega is currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII, and will next be seen on-screen opposite Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in The Circle.

He is also set to be making his stage debut on London’s West End in Woyzeck at the Old Vic next year (2017).
