John Boyega joins Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit crime drama

John Boyega

JOHN Boyega is set to star in Kathryn Bigelow’s as-yet untitled Detroit crime drama.

Plot details also remain unknown for the project, although The Hollywood Reporter states that the story will be set against the backdrop of the devastating riots that shook Detroit over five summer days in 1967.

It will examine the systemic racism in the city and is being described as an ensemble piece.

Shooting is due to take place in Detroit and Boston this summer with a view to having the film ready for release in the summer of 2017 – which would mark the 50th anniversary of the riots.

The film would mark Bigelow’s first feature since 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty.

Boyega is currently shooting the follow-up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Episode VIII in which he will reprise his critically-acclaimed role as Stormtrooper-with-a-conscience Finn.

He also recently nabbed the lead in Pacific Rim 2 and has The Circle, with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, in the can.
