JOHN Boyega has teased that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be ‘much darker’ than The Force Awakens.

In an interview with British Vogue, the 23-year-old Peckham-born actor predicted that he might have to get in training for the upcoming sequel, which is due to begin filming within weeks.

“It’s great. Much darker, but we’re very excited,” said Boyega, when asked to comment upon the script for the film, which is being directed by Rian Johnson.

He added “My part in the next film will be much more physical, so I might be in the gym a bit more.”

Boyega’s co-star, Daisy Ridley, has already described the screenplay for Episode VIII as “very good; very good”.

In related Star Wars news, JJ Abrams, director of The Force Awakens, has also weighed in on what to expect from Episode VIII.

“I am very much excited for and very jealous of anyone, especially Rian, who gets to work so close to this extraordinary cast and crew – truly an amazing group. But honestly, I’m also relieved to have gotten that chance to do a Star Wars movie.”

Abrams’ also confirmed that he knew the true identity of Ridley’s space scavenger, Rey, and who her parents are. The true identity of the character is one of the biggest unanswered questions to emerge from The Force Awakens, with many fans predicting that she will be related to either the Skywalker or Kenobi family trees.

Little is known about Johnson’s film, which the Looper and Breaking Bad director is also writing.

But rumours persist that Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro has been cast in an unspecified role.

As well as Boyega and Ridley, Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) are all expected to return.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is due in cinemas in May 2017.
