Johnny Depp in talks for sci-fi thriller Transcendence
Story by Jack Foley
JOHNNY Depp is in talks to star in new sci-fi epic Transcendence.
The film, described as being in the vein of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Inception, will mark the directorial debut of Inception cinematographer Wally Pfister.
Plot details are reportedly being kept under wraps although, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the story will focus on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness.
Depp is being lined up to play a husband who gets sucked into the computer, although the script is still subject to re-writes and change.
The report goes on to state that Noomi Rapace is being eyed as a potential female lead, while James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire are on the shortlist for other significant roles. Christoph Waltz has also been offered a supporting role.
The film already has Warner Bros on board as distributor and principal photography is due to commence next year.
What’s more, Pfister’s long-time collaborator Christopher Nolan is serving as executive producing alongside wife Emma Thomas.
Commenting on Depp’s involvement, a clearly optimistic Pfister said: “I’m thrilled and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative.”
