Johnny Depp in talks to play Houdini
Story by Jack Foley
JOHNNY Depp is in talks to play Houdini in a new movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is considering taking on the role of the iconic magician in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero.
Directed by Dean Parisot (of Red 2 fame), the film would recast Houdini as an investigator of the world of the occult as well as a master escape artist. The story would be in the vein of Indiana Jones.
Noah Oppenheim wrote the screenplay, which is based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman’s book of the same name.
Lionsgate is producing the film, which would mean working with Depp for a second time following their current collaboration on Mortdecai, which is being released next year.
Depp is currently on a bad run of movies having seen his last two blockbusters – The Lone Ranger and Transcendence – flop. But he remains in hot demand and in addition to two franchise sequels in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Alice in Wonderland (aka Through The Looking Glass) also has the Whitey Bulger crime drama Black Mass to finish.
His commitment to The Secret Life is therefore dependent on whether he can fit it in to his schedule and whether Disney will allow him to shoot the film before he starts on Pirates 5.
