JOHNNY Depp has joined the cast of the sequel to Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them.

As yet, the character that the Pirates of the Caribbean star will play has not been confirmed. But he is expected to make a cameo in the first film, which is due for release in cinemas later this month. His role will then be expanded in the follow-up and is described as ‘significant’.

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them is a children’s fantasy film set in JK Rowling’s ‘wizarding world’, which takes place 70 years before Harry Potter enrols at Hogwarts.

David Yates, who directed several Harry Potter entries, has helmed the first film and is already confirmed to direct the follow-up.

He recently confirmed that a total of five films are planned as part of the franchise.

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them follows the adventures of ‘magizoologist’ Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne), the author of the book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is prescribed reading for students at Hogwarts, the school attended by Harry Potter in JK Rowling’s books.

The first film follows the events that unfold when some magical creatures are inadvertently released in 1920s New York.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them will be released in Australia on November 17, 2016, and in the UK and US on November 18. The sequel is already scheduled for release on November 16, 2018.
