Johnny Depp speaks of island hideaway
Story by Jack Foley
JOHNNY Depp has been speaking about his own private island hideaway that he uses to escape from the pressure of celebrity and making movies.
The Pirates of the Caribbean mega-star owns his his own Bahamian island, known as Little Hall’s Pond Cay. It’s a 45-acre private beauty spot that boasts six beaches and plenty of privacy.
Commenting in the July issue of Vanity Fair, Depp – who will next be playing John Dillinger in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies – said: “You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats – it’s instant freedom and a little morsel of anonymity. That rare beast – simplicity – can be had.”
The actor went on to describe the experience of being on the island as his way of returning to something approaching normal life, adding: “Escapism is survival to me.”
He went on to reveal that he had spent the past Christmas season on the island with his partner, Vanessa Paradis, and kids, and had spent time feeding hot dogs to nurse sharks.
Of the six beaches, all have been christened with names that are special to Depp.
One is called Paradis, after his partner, two more are called Lily Rose and Jack after their children, while a fourth is called Brando after his mentor Marlon, and a fifth is named Gonzo in memory of his late friend Hunter S Thompson.
Finally, there is an area dubbed ‘Heath’s Place’ after the late Australian actor Heath Ledger.
“I don’t think I’d ever seen any place so pure and beautiful,” Depp concluded in the interview.
