JOHNNY Depp looks set to play Dr. Seuss in a new live action film about his life.

Illumination Entertainment and Infinitum Nihil are currently developing the movie about the life of the classic children’s author and illustrator (aka Theodor Geisel) and Depp will produce the project with the potential to star, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Born in 1904, Geisel spent much of his childhood in Springfield, Massachusetts before going to college at Dartmouth.

Throughout his early years, he drew advertising and comic strips, then political cartoons during World War II, but by 1950, he was publishing the books that became worldwide classics (including The Grinch and The Cat In The Hat).

He died of throat cancer in 1991.

Many of his works have been turned into films, while an animated adaptation of Seuss’s The Lorax is due to hit cinemas in the US in March, thanks to Universal and Illumination.

Depp, meanwhile, is currently preparing to see several recently completed films open in cinemas. Next up for him is The Rum Diary, followed by the Martin Scorsese-directed Hugo.

The actor is then re-teaming with frequent collaborator Tim Burton for Dark Shadows, which is due for release in May 2012.
