JON Bernthal and Vera Farmiga have joined the cast of big screen Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark.

Set in the era of the Newark riots in the 1960s, the ensemble drama takes place at a time when African-Americans and Italians in Newark are at each other’s throats.

Further plot details are unclear but it is widely expected that some of the characters beloved from The Sopranos will make an appearance.

Bernthal, of The Walking Dead and The Punisher fame, and Farmiga (Bates Motel, Up In The Air) will join actor Alessandro Nivola, who will play Dickey Moltisanti, the mentor of teenage Tony Soprano.

Alan Taylor will direct from a script by Sopranos creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner.

Farmiga will next be seen in blockbuster sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while Bernthal can currently be seen in the second season of The Punisher on Netflix.
