Jose Padilha directs Elite Squad

Story by Jack Foley

BRAZILIAN director Jose Padilha, the man behind the Elite Squad movies, is in talks to direct the Robocop remake.

MGM is reported to be investing $80 million in the reboot, which will be a re-imagining of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi action film, which followed a cop who is brought back from the brink of death in the form of a cyborg with no memories of his prior life.

The project has been being developed for some time with Black Swan‘s Darren Aronofsky attached to direct at one point.

But the latest incarnation could see Padilha making his Hollywood debut in the wake of the overwhelming box office success [in Brazil] of his Elite Squad movies – Elite Squad 2 recently became the highest-grossing film in Brazil’s box office history.

At one point, Padilha was to have made his US debut with The Sigma Protocol, an adaptation of a Robert Ludlum novel, but has since moved on.
