JOHN Lasseter has stepped down as director of Toy Story 4, leaving sole directing duties to Josh Cooley, who was to have co-helmed.

Lasseter revealed the news on Friday at D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.

Cooley served as head of story on the Pixar hit Inside Out and was named one of Variety‘s 10 Animators to Watch in 2015. He began life at Pixar working as an intern on Cars, which Lasseter directed as a passion project.

Toy Story 4 will bring back original stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen and will reportedly find Woody and Buzz on a new mission to find Bo after she goes missing.

The script has been co-penned by Will McCormick and Rashida Jones and is based on a story by the Pixar Braintrust (comprised of Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich).

The fourth instalment in the animated franchise is due to be released on June 21, 2019.

Toy Story 3 remains Pixar’s highest-grossing film, having hauled in $1.1 billion worldwide.
