DANCING With The Star‘s champion Julianne Hough is to star alongside Tom Cruise in a big screen version of Broadway hit Rock of Ages.

Soul singer Mary J. Blige is also set to star in the musical, which will go before the cameras in Florida in May.

Adam Shankman, of Hairspray fame, is directing and choreographing the movie version, which is built around rock hits of the 1980s by Journey, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi and Pat Benatar.

The story focuses on a couple that meets at the Sunset Strip club Rock of Ages, falls in love and tries to stay together.

Announcing Hough’s casting on Thursday, Shankman told Variety: “I asked her if she wanted to be in a movie with Tom Cruise and she wanted to not get on the plane so she could celebrate. Her audition was surreal – maybe the best I’ve ever seen.”

Rock of Ages premiered in Los Angeles in 2006 and came to Broadway three years later, where it subsequently received five Tony nominations.

Hough is no stranger to movies, having appeared alongside Christine Aguilera and Cher in Burlesque. She’ll also be in Paramount’s remake of Footloose, due out later this year.
