JULIANNE Moore is to star in a remake of classic 1976 horror film Carrie alongside Chloe Grace Moretz.

Movie industry website Deadline has reported the news, revealing that Moore will play the role of Margaret White, the mother of a teenage girl with supernatural powers.

Moretz, 15, will play Carrie – adding to a list of high-profile roles for the young actress who has played a teenage assassin in Kick-Ass, a young werewolf in Dark Shadows and a young vampire in Let Me In.

According to Moretz, the film will be “a modern-day re-telling, not based in the ’70s or anything”.

She predicted it will be “dark but exciting” and even went so far as to compare it to the 2010 Natalie Portman film Black Swan when speaking to the BBC.

The original Carrie was based on a novel of the same name by Stephen King and starred Sissy Spacek in the title role and Piper Laurie as her mother. Both received Oscar nominations for their performances.

The remake will be directed by Kimberly Pierce, whose previous films include Hilary Swank’s Boys Don’t Cry.
