Kate Winslet to star in The Dressmaker
Story by Jack Foley
KATE Winslet is to star in new comedy-tinged period drama The Dressmaker.
Based on Rosalie Ham’s award-winning novel set in the 1950s, the film will see Winslet playing an Australian woman who returns to the small Outback town where she grew up with revenge on her mind.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film has been described by writer-director Jocelyn Moorhouse as “Unforgiven with a sewing machine“.
Winslet plays Tilly Dunnage, who arrives back in the land of her birth from Europe, having been forced to leave Australia as a child after being accused of murder.
Once back, however, she wants to make amends with her eccentric mother Molly, but must first unravel the secrets of her past.
The film also stars Australian two-time Oscar nominee Judy Davis as Molly.
Producer Sue Maslin commented: “This is a project with rich, complex characters and an indelible Australian setting. Jocelyn is the perfect film-maker to bring Rosalie Ham’s book to screens throughout the world.
“The incredible assembly of talent in front of and behind the camera is testimony to the ambition of everyone involved to make a great film. We look forward to working with Universal Pictures to bring this project to Australian audiences.”
