KATHERINE Waterston has landed one of the female leads in Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The British actress, who appeared with Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice (pictured), will play the role of Tina, or Porpentina, a witch who operates in the US.

The setting is a switch from the Potter books, which were set in London and other parts of England.

Warner Bros., who made the casting announcement on Monday morning, said that Porpentina will meet magizoologist Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, when he stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures.

JK Rowling, who penned the book, will also be making her screenwriting debut for the film, while Harry Potter luminary David Yates, who directed of the last four Harry Potter films, is back behind the camera.

David Heyman, who produced all of the Harry Potter films, is also back on board in that capacity.

Waterston’s other notable credits include a recurring role in acclaimed TV series Boardwalk Empire. She will next be seen playing Chrisann Brennan, Steve Jobs’ girlfriend, in the upcoming Jobs biopic directed by Danny Boyle and starring Michael Fassbender.
