Story by Jack Foley
KEVIN Spacey is to play iconic British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Captain of the Gate.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will chronicle his rise to power as he stood against Parliament to defend Britain and the world from Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich.
He led the British campaign against Nazi Germany from 1940-45 despite having warned of the threat posed by Hitler long before war broke out. And he became Prime Minister of Britain for a second time from 1951-55.
He is is widely and rightly regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th Century.
Ben Kaplan, who has previously tackled the late President Ronald Reagan for a History Channel film, penned the screenplay, while Sierra/Affinity is producing and fully financing for around $20 million. StudioCanal are also in talks to come on board.
Spacey is no stranger to political dramas. He can currently be seen playing devious politician Francis Underwood in Netflix’s House of Cards, which is now in its second season.
In addition, Spacey has produced the documentary NOW: In the Wings on a World Stage, a behind-the-scenes look at the actor’s recent stage collaboration with Sam Mendes for Richard III, which he will self-distribute.
And he has just announced that he will star in the one man play Clarence Darrow at The Old Vic as part of his theatre’s Summer/Autumn 2014 programme.
