KIM Basinger is to join the cast of Fifty Shades of Grey sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, as Christian Grey’s business partner and former lover.

The role of Elena Lincoln is described as a key one, and was even hinted at in the first instalment, setting the stage for a big reveal in the second.

The casting news was announced by trade publication Variety, which quotes sources.

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are returning to reprise their roles of Anastasia Steele and Grey, respectively, while James Foley will direct, replacing Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini are also returning to the cast.

Universal is planning to shoot Fifty Shades Darker and the concluding part, Fifty Shades Freed, back-to-back, so is keen to lock down cast members before production begins on the sequel.

Basinger, an Academy Award winner for LA Confidential, will next be seen in Shane Black’s The Nice Guys opposite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
