Kon-Tiki star Tobias Santelmann to play Hercules villain

Story by Jack Foley

KON-Tiki star Tobias Santelmann is to play the villain alongside Dwayne Johnson in Hercules.

Brett Ratner is directing the film, which is adopting a more grounded approach to the classic Greek hero and ditching the supernatural elements of the story.

This means that Hercules is portrayed not as the son of Zeus but rather as a mortal with a fearsome reputation. The plot finds him leading a team of mercenaries on a job where all is not what it seems.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Santelmann, one of the stars of the Oscar-nominated Scandinavian adventure movie Kon-Tiki, will play a character named Rhesus, a golden-locked barbarian and revolutionary who is Hercules’ main foe.

He joins a cast that also includes Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt and Rebecca Ferguson.

Kon-Tiki is proving a springboard for several of the people involved in its making. The film’s directors, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, recently beat out several competitors to nab the gig of directing Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
