La La Land and Deadpool among Producers Guild of America awards nominees

Story by Jack Foley

AWARDS laden musical La La Land and subversive superhero movie Deadpool are among the nominees for the Producers Guild of America’s awards.

The nominations, a key indicator of which films will feature prominently at the Oscars, also shortlisted Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight on its shortlist of the 10 best films.

But Ryan Reynolds superhero movie Deadpool is arguably the most surprising entry of the nominations given that it was included at the expense of the likes of Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, Clint Eastwood’s Sully and Martin Scorsese’s Silence.

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi stunner Arrival, Denzel Washington’s Fences, historical drama Hidden Figures and Mel Gibson’s World War II epic Hacksaw Ridge were also on the shortlist.

In the past, the PGA award has been a reliable guide to the subsequent winner of the best picture Oscar, with 19 out of 27 winners of previous awards matching. Last year, however, the result diverged when financial drama The Big Short took the PGA award and Spotlight won the Oscar.

The PGA have also announced its nominations for best animated film, which include Pixar’s Finding Dory, Disney’s Zootropolis and Kubo & The Two Strings.

Seven out of the 11 previous winners have gone on to win the equivalent Oscar.

The winners will be announced on January 28m 2017, at a ceremony in Beverly Hills.
