La La Land and OJ: Made in America among AFI's best of 2016

La La Land

Story by Jack Foley

DAMIEN Chazelle’s La La Land and TV documentary OJ: Made in America have both been included in the American Film Institute’s best movies and TV shows of the year.

The latter, a nearly eight-hour long documentary, received a special award.

The titles, presented in alphabetical order, are works that the AFI’s juries have determined to have advanced the art of the moving image, enhanced the cultural heritage of America’s art form, inspired audiences and artists and made a mark on American society.

AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said in a statement: “Year after year, we are reminded of the power of artists to bring us together as one. AFI Awards is proud to recognize the achievements of the storytelling teams who have enlightened and informed us, guided and inspired us, and ultimately invited us to empathize with others in a reminder of our common humanity.”
