CHINESE actress Li Bingbing has joined the cast of Transformers 4.

Previously best known for her role in Resident Evil: Retribution, Bingbing is one of several well known Chinese stars who are expected to be announced as part of the production as well as newcomers recruited from a talent-scouting competition.

It forms part of Paramount’s commitment to working more closely with China, following the involvement of financiers from the country as well as having parts of the film set and shot there.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this in turn will enable the movie to circumvent the Chinese import quota and take a bigger portion of box office earnings in what is now considered to bee the second-biggest source of box office revenue in the world.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon made $177.3 million in tickets sales in China when released in 2010 and still stands as the second-highest-grossing foreign film to be screened there. Avatar ranks first.

Dark of the Moon is also the fourth highest-grossing film overall in Chinese box office history.

Shooting on Michael Bay’s blockbuster, which now stars Mark Wahlberg in the leading role, is due to commence later this year with a release date set for June 27, 2014.
