London Film Festival 2007 Selection 2

The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Preview by Jack Foley

Film: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Director: Andrew Dominik

Who’s in it? Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Sam Shepard, Paul Schneider

What’s it about? The story of how “gentleman outlaw” Jesse James (Pitt) was murdered by Robert Ford (Affleck), a member of the James gang.

Why you should see it: The buzz surrounding Andrew (Chopper) Dominik’s epic western is pretty phenomenal. Based on the novel by Ron Hansen, it’s said to be a brilliantly realised piece of filmmaking that fuses the tension and thrills of Don Siegel and Sam Peckinpah with the esoteric, even ethereal, qualities of Terrence Malick. Brad Pitt has already won a Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival and critics are divided over who gives the better performance – Pitt or Affleck. Not even a two and a half hour plus running time has prevented people from hailing it as an instant classic.

Festival dates: October 19 and 21 (Odeon West End 2, 8.30pm and 12noon)

Release date: November 30, 2007.
