Lorenzo di Bonaventura talks Jack Ryan reboot and Kevin Costner

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

Story by Jack Foley

PRODUCER Lorenzo di Bonaventura saw the idea of rebooting the Jack Ryan franchise as an opportunity to do something that hadn’t been done before.

Speaking at a UK press conference ahead of the release of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in UK cinemas on Friday (January 24), di Bonaventura – whose previous producing credentials extend to Transformers and GI Joe – said the film offered “a more complete character study of somebody”.

“You rarely see a movie where you see the lead character probably facing the three or four most seminal moments in his life all in one movie,” he commented. “It’s usually about one seminal moment, if that. So, that gave us a great opportunity to connect the audience to the character again.”

He also talked about the experience of working with Kevin Costner on the film and what he brought to the role of a CIA handler and Jack Ryan’s mentor.

“I think one of the things that’s so interesting about Kevin is that as a person and as an actor he convicts so utterly and completely to his point of view and so I think it’s one of the things that endears him to us is that he is a guy who wears it right on his sleeve.

“And in this case, having Kevin in this movie was fantastic for us because it was not the traditional younger/older man relationship because he’s not sitting behind a desk. So, you needed a guy like Kevin who could go out in the field and shoot somebody and be active and let the audience believe that that’s character is capable of it.”
