Lupita Nyong’o to star in Born a Crime

12 Years A Slave

Story by Jack Foley

OSCAR-winning actress and Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’o is to star in an adaptation of The Daily Show host Trevor Noah’s memoir, Born a Crime.

Although the project is in the early stages of development, with no writer or director attached, Nyong’o has signed on to play Noah’s mother, the central figure in the book.

Noah was conceived from a white father and a black mother under a regime in which mixed relations were punishable by months-long prison incarcerations. The book pays particular attention to Noah’s time with his mother, who at first concealed her son to keep him safe from the threat of being taken by government forces, to later giving everything to him in order to break a cycle of poverty and violence.

The ensuing film has been described as not just Noah’s account of growing up under Apartheid rule in South Africa but also a love letter to his mother.

The book, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, was released in 2016 and became a best-seller.

Both Nyong’o and Noah are among the film’s producers.
