Story by Jack Foley
MAMMA Mia! The Movie scooped two of the top prizes at the second National Movie Awards in London on Monday, September 8.
The film, based on the stage show that features the songs of Abba, won best musical, while its main star Meryl Streep was named best female actress.
The awards were designed to “recognise and reward the year’s blockbuster movies and the stars that appear in them”, and are voted for entirely by the public in a nationwide poll.
Further prizes went to Johnny Depp, who was named best male actor for his role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Of Fleet Street, and to the films The Dark Knight, Wall-E and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale as Batman and the late Heath Ledger as The Joker, beat Iron Man and Hancock to the best superhero prize.
While the long-awaited fourth instalment of the Indiana Jones franchise – which saw Harrison Ford reprise his role as the famed archaeologist for the first time in 19 years – was named best action and adventure film.
Juno, a movie about a pregnant teenager played by Ellen Page, took best comedy, while Pixar’s Wall-E, about a love-struck robot, won the best family prize.
Film fans can see highlights from the ceremony when it’s broadcast on ITV1 on September 9.
