Man of Steel footage unveiled at Comic-Con

Superman: Man of Steel

Story by Jack Foley

FOOTAGE from Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel has drawn an enthusiastic response from crowds at San Diego Comic-Con.

Indeed, such was the response that one fan was seen to be reduced to tears.

The footage itself attempted to show was Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan are attempting to achieve with the reboot. And that’s to move away from any thoughts of past films, much like Nolan did with the relaunch of his Batman franchise.

Snyder explained: “We had to act as if no film has been made. When we approached it, we had to say ‘this is Superman for the first time’.”

That means all referencing would be removed, including any temptation to use things such as John Williams’ iconic score… something that Snyder was asked to address directly at one point.

“You can’t say, ‘Oh, now let’s steal a little music.’ So yes, it’s awesome music but Hans (Zimmer) is going to do something awesome,” he replied.

The Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill, also attended the panel and elaborated further on his approach to making things seem fresh and new.

“I just wanted to bring as much of the modern Superman into the world,” he explained. “You guys know everything about him. You’re there through thick and thin.

“This is for everyone else out there. To bring him to the modern world that everyone can associate with.”

Asked whether Zod will be the main villain in the film, Snyder was keen to keep actual plot details as closely guarded a secret as possible, even though Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Shannon has been cast to play the role.

He did, however, suggest that while he sought to respect the ‘mythology’ of Superman, Man of Steel would be “a mashing of stories” with the emphasis on making Superman himself “work and making him cool”.

And pushed on whether the reboot marked the first step towards a potential Justice League movie (a la Marvel’s Avengers success), Snyder hedged his bets by saying: “Let’s say this: We know that Superman is the jewel in the DC crown. We wanted to get this house in order. And then…who knows what’s possible?”
