Manchester By The Sea leads Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations

Manchester By The Sea

Story by Jack Foley

CASEY Affleck drama Manchester by the Sea has received the most nominations for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, with four nods.

Affleck, Michelle Williams and Lucas Hedges have all received acting nominations for their roles, while the drama, which tells the story of a working-class family dealing with multiple tragedies, is also up for outstanding performance by a cast.

Moonlight and Fences have each received three nominations, with both up for outstanding performance by a cast.

Denzel Washington, who also directs Fences, and Viola Davis have been nominated for lead actor and supporting actress for the film, which takes the form of a family drama set in 1950s Pittsburgh.

While Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali have each received nominations in the supporting categories for Moonlight – a film about a boy growing up gay, black and poor in Miami.

Among the surprises, musical drama La La Land, which leads the nominations for the Golden Globes, received only two nominations from SAG.

Its two stars – Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling – have been nominated in the two lead acting categories but the cast as a whole missed out on an ensemble nod.

British nominees include Andrew Garfield (for Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge), Emily Blunt (for The Girl on The Train) and Dev Patel (for Lion).

Among the TV categories, there were multiple nominations for HBO series Game of Thrones, The Night Of and Westworld. Thandie Newton is among the best actress nominees for the latter.

There was, however, no mention of acclaimed BBC spy drama The Night Manager, even though it also picked up a number of Golden Globe nominations earlier in the week.

The ceremony will take place on January 29, 2017.

Lily Tomlin has already been announced as the recipient of the 2017 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
