MARGOT Robbie looks set to play disgraced American figure skater Tonya Harding in a new film drama.

I, Tonya will focus on the now infamous incident in which Harding’s rival, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked with an iron bar at a competition prior to the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Steven Rogers has penned the screenplay, which is based on extensive interviews he conducted with Harding and her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly.

According to Deadline, Robbie will also serve as a producer and will be active in helping to find a director.

Harding went from a poor upbringing in Portland, Oregon to become the first American woman to land a triple axel jump in a major competition.

She went on to win the ladies’ singles title at the 1991 US figure skating championships and was second at that year’s world championships before the controversy erupted.

Gillooly was subsequently arrested for hiring men to attack Kerrigan at a competition before the 1994 Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Harding later admitted to knowing about the attack after the fact and was banned for life and stripped of her 1994 US championship gold.

She later released a sex tape with Gillooly and competed on the TV show Celebrity Boxing.

Kerrigan recovered from her injuries in time to compete at the Olympics, where she won a silver medal.

Robbie first shot to prominence playing Naomi Lapaglia, the second wife of Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, and will next appear as Jane in The Legend of Tarzan and as super-villain Harley Quinn in the eagerly-anticipated comic book epic Suicide Squad.
