Margot Robbie to play Barbie in live action film

Wolf of Wall Street

Story by Jack Foley

MARGOT Robbie is to play Barbie in a live action film.

The Australian actress, best known for playing Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, will also produce the movie through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.

She said in a statement that she took on the role of the iconic doll because she promoted “confidence, curiosity and communication”.

“I’m so honoured to take on this role that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children,” she added.

The film also marks a partnership between Robbie, Warner Bros and Barbie creator Mattel.

As yet, there is no official name for the film, or a release date or director – but these announcements are expected to be made soon.

Toby Emmerich, of Warner Bros, commented: “Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”

There have been previous attempts to bring Barbie to the big screen. Comedian Amy Schumer had previously been cast to play the doll, only to drop out of the project in 2017, while Anne Hathaway had been rumoured for the role prior to Robbie’s casting.

The first Barbie doll, made by Mattel, was released at the New York Toy Fair in 1959. The character went on to appear in a string of TV shows and animated films, among them the Toy Story movies.

Robbie will next be seen in the historical drama Mary Queen of Scots.
