MARK Ruffalo has been confirmed as the new actor playing The Incredible Hulk, replacing Edward Norton.

Ruffalo’s appointment was confirmed at Comic-Con on Saturday (July 24) after he took to the stage with fellow cast members of Marvel’s The Avengers movie to send the San Diego crowds into a frenzy of excitement.

The star-studded launch was kick-started by Samuel L Jackson, who first appeared on stage to introduce the initial Avengers cast (most of whom were introduced as part of the plot of this summer’s Iron Man 2.

This included Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr, as well as Chris Hemsworth (the upcoming Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America).

Downey Jr. then reportedly took to the podium and asked the crowd if they’d seen Inception, describing it as “the most ambitious movie” he’d ever seen.

Ever the showman, he then paused, smiled and followed up: “Then I thought: Wait a Goddamned minute. Marvel is going to take all of their top superheroes and put them together in one movie. THAT is the most ambitious movie ever!”

As the crowd roared their approval, Downey Jr then brought on Oscar nominee Jeremy (The Hurt Locker) Renner, who will play Hawkeye, and finally Mr Ruffalo.

The crowd continued to cheer as as the movie’s director, Joss Whedon, then came out, addressing the crowd: “This is The Avengers… they are more than the sum of its parts.”

He then confessed to being nervous about the possibility of blowing the movie, but asked the crowd for their continued love and support.

It now remains to be seen whether Whedon can pull it off… but the omens would appear to be good at this stage.
